HEROES VI

Who absorbs the hit aimed at the shooter?

Sentinel absorbs some damage aimed at an adjacent ally. Its own ranged-damage shield is a separate trait rather than equal protection for every distant shooter.

Crossbowman and Sister are adjacent to Sentinel. Green lines represent protection rather than movement. When an eligible attack hits a neighbor, the protector can take damage without being directly targeted.

Opening and composition

The area centre versus an individual mine

Starting situation

An area centre lies behind one guard, with several mines or dwellings around it.

Decision sequence

  1. Inspect the area boundary and identify which sites actually belong to the centre.
  2. Compare the capture cost with the whole area’s gain. Do not plan several separate expeditions when taking the centre transfers linked sites.
  3. Retain enough force or a return plan to hold the centre. Losing it can reverse the value of the whole territory.

How to choose

Count the linked income and recruitment you can retain rather than only the town symbol’s value.

When to reassess

A site outside the assumed boundary may not transfer with the same capture. The actual control area matters.

Construction and recruitment

The shared pool: who recruits and who needs the force

Starting situation

Two heroes can access shared reinforcements and both face important tasks.

Decision sequence

  1. Allocate recruitment for the next decisive battle. Buying from a shared pool does not duplicate it for the other commander.
  2. Check recruitment location and creature form. Direct visits to external faction dwellings offer base creatures.
  3. After a major purchase, recheck the second area’s defense and your remaining money.

How to choose

The realm’s total pool and a particular hero’s army are different quantities. Decide who actually carries the troops for each objective.

When to reassess

Neutral elemental and other neutral dwellings are not the same shared faction recruitment and require personal visits.

Construction and recruitment

Four resources and money left for your troops

Starting situation

An important building consumes crystals and gold also needed for reinforcing the army.

Decision sequence

  1. Budget gold, wood, ore and Blood Crystals. Do not add sulfur or gems from other games.
  2. Add missing prerequisites and the troops the new building makes available.
  3. Compare the scarce resource with opening another territory. Earlier control of a mine can change the entire schedule.

How to choose

The budget should produce a usable army and a sustainable area. A completed building alone does not guarantee either.

When to reassess

The cited Heroes VI rule gives a gold mine 500 gold daily. Do not automatically import the 1,000 income used in other games.

Neutral fights

Arena: training losses and the permanent bonus

Starting situation

You are visiting an Arena before a real battle and choosing Might Power or Might Defense.

Decision sequence

  1. Distinguish the training fight from an ordinary guarded reward. Creatures lost in Arena training are restored.
  2. Choose the permanent +2 for the commander’s role and relevant army rather than simply increasing an already high value.
  3. Schedule the visit before the battle that needs the bonus. Arcane Library develops magic attributes instead.

How to choose

A useful detour can permanently improve later expeditions, but compare its travel cost with the objective’s deadline.

When to reassess

Arcane Library is not merely a next-battle buff: its +1 to +3 depends on hero level and is available once per hero.

Magic and resources

Week-long preparation and a one-battle bonus

Starting situation

The route includes Stables, a Dragon Vein and a next-battle support site, followed by several fights.

Decision sequence

  1. Separate week-end expiration, weekly visit availability and next-battle expiration. These are different conditions.
  2. Use movement benefits in time and collect a single-battle buff before the objective that actually needs it.
  3. Recover mana where your actual reserve requires it. Visiting a buff site does not replace a missing spell.

How to choose

A good visit sequence preserves the strongest support for the most expensive fight without wasting movement.

When to reassess

An easy first guard can consume the one-battle bonus intended for the main opponent.

Construction and recruitment

Necropolis: Chamber of Necromancy or Wasting Grounds

Starting situation

The same building branch offers Necromancy development or weakening living enemies in the area.

Decision sequence

  1. Check whether the next opponent actually uses living creatures and fights in the relevant area.
  2. Compare the weakening effect with future Necromancy points. Chamber increases points earned; it does not automatically start combat with a fully charged ability.
  3. Include later expected battles. A long expedition may favor a faction plan that can be used repeatedly.

How to choose

The excluded alternative matters through actual objectives. Choose the building whose conditions your next battles satisfy.

When to reassess

A town building and a visitable object with the same name can have different scope and duration.

Adventure movement

Warpath Lodge: a bonus based on owned buildings

Starting situation

You want to chain two fights in one turn using movement restored after victory.

Decision sequence

  1. Count owned Warpath Lodges. The first adds 3 Movement after combat, the second 2 and each further one 1.
  2. With two owned sites, plan for +5 rather than interpreting the numbers as decreasing rewards for successive victories.
  3. Subtract the actual travel cost to the next target from restored movement. Also check that you can hold the gained territory.

How to choose

A movement chain is useful only if enough combat strength survives for the following fight.

When to reassess

Ownership changes alter the calculation. Do not assume the same bonus after losing the area.

Sieges

Special defenses must apply in this area

Starting situation

A town has a strong special building and you want its benefit in a nearby field battle too.

Decision sequence

  1. Read whether the effect applies during siege, on a visit, within the area or throughout the realm.
  2. Verify the actual battle location before attacking. Being near a town does not by itself guarantee the area condition.
  3. Choose composition and timing for the effect that actually applies. If support is unavailable, reassess the battle without it.

How to choose

A powerful building helps only under its exact trigger. Do not count its support twice or in the wrong location.

When to reassess

Mutually exclusive alternatives cannot both be assumed in one town. Check which option is actually built before the siege.
