HEROES V · ATB

Who actually reaches the next action first?

Blood Fury has base Speed eight and Initiative sixteen; Black Dragon has Speed nine and Initiative ten. This example assumes the displayed ATB order puts the Blood Fury first. The two stats alone do not determine the current queue.

The dragon’s greater movement does not mean more frequent actions. In this assumed ATB state the Blood Fury is the next threat. In the actual battle inspect its current bar position and reachable targets first.

ATB: read the next two threats before attacking

Starting situation

A creature has long movement reach, but two dangerous opponents are due to act soon.

Decision sequence

  1. Separate Speed from Initiative. Reaching a target and acting again soon are different advantages.
  2. Choose an attack for the upcoming enemy action it removes or weakens. An easy distant target need not be the priority.
  3. Before committing movement, check the second threat’s response and its path to your shooters.

How to choose

The gain comes from enemy actions actually denied before your next turn.

When to reassess

Do not assume everyone acts once before anyone acts again. Higher Initiative can give one stack extra actions while another waits.

Neutral fights

Wait is not a universal Heroes III double attack

Starting situation

A fast stack could wait and let the guard approach, but the timeline is not a classic Heroes III round.

Decision sequence

  1. Read the upcoming action order before waiting. Check which enemy will actually move before you.
  2. After the approach, recheck reach, retaliation and whether the enemy acts before your support.
  3. If a buff or debuff changes tempo, reassess the whole upcoming timeline segment.

How to choose

Use waiting for a better trade in the actual sequence rather than as an automatic opening.

When to reassess

A Speed bonus does not by itself increase action frequency. Initiative is the relevant value for that.

Opening and composition

Large creatures and space in front of your shooters

Starting situation

Your army includes a large creature and an important ranged stack. Both need free space.

Decision sequence

  1. Check the full space the large creature needs to move and stop. A route usable by a small stack may be insufficient.
  2. Do not screen in a way that blocks your own planned advance. Leave the support route you need.
  3. After each movement, recheck threats to your shooters and the fallback position.

How to choose

Good deployment enables safe shots and a genuinely usable attack route for your own large creature.

When to reassess

One empty-looking square is not enough. The full occupied footprint and available reach matter.

Construction and recruitment

Tribes of the East: choose an upgrade for its job

Starting situation

A creature line offers two upgraded forms with different abilities. The expedition’s objective is already known.

Decision sequence

  1. Compare both forms’ abilities rather than only one attack statistic. Look for an answer to the actual defender.
  2. Check the cost of retraining the existing stack, building availability and the army’s total strength after purchasing.
  3. Account for ATB timing: a suitable ability still needs an opportunity to matter.

How to choose

An alternative upgrade is a role choice within the army. One higher number is not an overall ranking.

When to reassess

These alternatives are not part of original base Heroes V in the same form. Check the expansion before following the advice.

Magic and resources

Stronghold: Blood Rage and a Warcry must help in time

Starting situation

You are playing a Tribes of the East Barbarian. Creatures have their Blood Rage state and dangerous contact is approaching.

Decision sequence

  1. Check the available Warcries before combat. Hall of Trial, Hall of Courage and Hall of Might teach the corresponding tiers 1, 2 and 3.
  2. Inspect the important stack’s state and next action. Choose the Warcry for the immediate problem.
  3. Compare immediate support with the hero’s alternative action. Do not assume a Warlock’s magic-development plan.

How to choose

A Warcry belongs in a particular sequence. Its value drops if the supported creature cannot make its important attack in time.

When to reassess

Blood Rage, runes and conventional magic schools are not interchangeable systems.

Construction and recruitment

Haven: Training versus direct recruitment

Starting situation

You have basic human creatures and access to Training, alongside recruitment competing for the same gold.

Decision sequence

  1. Check the supported conversions and available weekly Training capacity in your edition.
  2. Add conversion costs through the form you actually need for the fight. Do not stop the budget at the first step.
  3. Compare the result with ordinary recruitment and the funds needed for the following week.

How to choose

Training pays off when available conversions create a more useful force in time. It is not free conversion of every creature into any other creature.

When to reassess

Mods can change capacity and prices. Your own patch takes precedence over another release’s table.

Adventure movement

Reinforcements for the next fight, not a distant stockpile

Starting situation

Fresh growth is available in town while the main hero approaches a strong guard.

Decision sequence

  1. Identify which recruits actually change the next fight’s odds or cost.
  2. Compare purchase, delivery and the day reinforcements join. A town recruitment pool is not an army at the objective.
  3. If returning is expensive, consider another reachable guard or economic objective first.

How to choose

The right option improves strength in time without surrendering more map tempo than it gains.

When to reassess

Military Posts and basic external dwellings offer different recruits. A faction name does not guarantee any creature you want.

Sieges

Siege: coordinate entry with ATB support

Starting situation

An attacker can reach a defender, but the support stack acts later.

Decision sequence

  1. Inspect the timing of defensive responses and your own support.
  2. If entry would isolate the attacker, consider weakening the defense or waiting first. Recheck each option on the timeline.
  3. Plan room for the following stack too. A large attacker can block your intended support route after landing.

How to choose

Support must arrive in time at a usable position. Merely having enough creatures elsewhere on the battlefield is insufficient.

When to reassess

Initiative and defensive advantages can turn a safe field sequence into an expensive town assault.
