Choose the exact game and edition. Compare minimum and recommended configurations, check SSD requirements and diagnose launch, graphics or AI-turn problems.
A minimum configuration promises neither a particular frame rate nor resolution or turn duration. VRAM capacity is not a GPU performance ranking; an older game’s 2 GB RAM requirement is not a recommendation for an entire current computer.

The listed capacity covers the game installation. Leave additional free space for the operating system, saves, downloads and updates.
Edition and current installation
GOG lists 1.8 GHz and 2 GB RAM for its current package. These describe the distributed release rather than a period DOS computer. The page identifies DOSBox; changing emulation speed is separate from replacing the processor.
What to check on your computer
For overly fast animation or sound problems, inspect the supplied DOSBox settings and the package’s original configuration first. A faster GPU does not correct the wrong emulation mode. Keep the original configuration before editing it.
Launch, graphics or AI turns?
The game will not launch
Record the exact edition, build, operating system and full error message. A crash before the menu is not a frame-rate measurement. Verify a clean installation before adding a mod.
Low visual smoothness
Use the same scene, resolution and settings. Change one item at a time: shadows, effects or resolution. Record the result and retain the change that helped.
Long opponent turns
Compare the same save and AI. Map size, active player count and engine are part of the test; comparing two different maps does not isolate the computer’s contribution.
A DirectX library is missing
Microsoft distinguishes Windows DirectX from optional legacy libraries such as D3DX9 and XInput 1.3. Its June 2010 package adds these components without changing the system DirectX version. Follow the game’s installation instructions for the particular missing component.
